Cream of Wheat has long been a favorite of mine since I was little! However now that I am more health conscious I refuse to eat processed grains that are not actually a whole grain. There is a reason Cream of Wheat is so white and creamy……it is missing the bran!
My husband and have been on a 21 day cleanse called the Beachbody Ultimate Reset (<–click link for more info) and one of the breakfasts called for Farina. A quick google search revealed that Farina was like the healthier version of cream of wheat….all of a sudden my childhood memories of eating cream of wheat came back to me! Love that stuff 🙂
So I took a chance and bought a 25lb bag from Azure and hoped it would be good! (They also sell food grade containers and screw top lids sold separately that fit them). Well….with a family of 7, only four weeks later and that bag is pretty much gone! It’s nuttier than normal cream of wheat but still totally delicious. Here’s the recipe:
Farina
Boil 3 cups water, when it is at a rolling boil at 1 cup farina. With a whisk make sure it all is stirred in well (otherwise it could clump up which isn’t the tastiest). Turn heat to the lowest setting, cover and cook for 10 min. You might stir it a couple times just to make sure it doesn’t burn on the bottom but I forget often and it doesn’t happen. Just depends on your pot/heat of burner etc
Now here’s the yummy part……optional ingredients!
To make it creamy….add 1/3 cup milk (or more as you desire, milk substitutes are fine)
To make it sweet…..chop up 1 banana, 1/3 cup coconut sugar, 1 tbsp. organic maple syrup
Add a little spice….1/2 tsp cinnamon
I do all of the above when I make farina.
optional….some chopped pecans would be delicious! My husband adds coconut. Whatever your heart desires!
